THE STRUGGLE
A man is trapped in a cycle of pornography. He confesses to his pastor. A book is recommended. Accountability software is installed on every device. Weekly check-ins begin.
THE INITIAL VICTORY
Two months of apparent victory. The system appears to work. Willpower seems to hold. The pastor is encouraged.
THE RELAPSE
One night, the old pull returns. He finds a device without the software — or simply a way around it. The fall is followed by shame, guilt, and dread of the next check-in.
THE COVER-UP
He lies to the pastor. The external system is intact but the real condition is hidden. The cycle restarts with even heavier guilt.
WHAT ROMANS 6 EXPOSES
The tools themselves are not the problem — but they cannot reach the source. Accountability apps restrain the flesh. Willpower suppresses the flesh. Weekly check-ins monitor the flesh. Yet Paul's answer is not mere management of the flesh, but death-and-life in Christ. He says the old man was crucified (Romans 6:6). These external helps can serve a purpose — but they cannot supply what only reckoning, refusal, and presenting can. Freedom does not come from a better system of management. It comes from seeing what has already been done, and presenting yourself accordingly to God.
